Advice on hiring a Wedding DJ

Initial contact with any DJ is important whether via email or telephone.
Please find below some tips on booking a DJ and the questions you need to ask.

1 Will the DJ provide a Contract with a deposit payable?
Always get a written confirmation.

2 Insist on a client meeting, be wary of the DJ who does not want to meet before hand, what is he hiding?

3 Does the DJ play requests or the choice of music you have chosen ?
Some DJ’s do not offer this service.

4 Are they insured?
Although not compulsory a lot of venues now insist that the entertainment hired has public liability insurance.

5 Does the DJ have a pat certificate (portable appliance test) ?
Again not compulsory but a professional entertainer should have his equipment tested annually.

6 Ask the DJ if he/she plays copied music. If so, does he/she have a pro-dub licence?
Any DJ who uses copied music MUST have the licence to play at a venue where he/she is being paid to perform.
This applies to DJ’s using CDR, portable hard drives and I pods.

7 Does the DJ have back up equipment in the unlikely event of break down?
It does not happen very often but ask the DJ if he/she has spare equipment. Not all DJ’s carry spare kit around with them.

8 Ask yourself what sort of DJ you want to hire for your reception. Every DJ has his/her own presenting style.
Some have a good personality and will interact with your guests. Some will just stand there playing music all night without saying a word. A good wedding DJ will interact with your guests, but the choice is up to you.

9 Will the DJ be flexible on start and finish times ?
Times are normally stated in the contract but if you would like the DJ to start a little earlier or stay a bit later will he/she accommodate your request?

10 Ask the DJ if you can see him/her in action. Although not always convenient, he/she may be able to arrange for you to come along to one of his/her performances.

Your wedding DJ should be smartly dressed, polite and respectful of your requirements.
